Engineering Underwater Lighting That Lasts: How Metro Marine Lighting Is Redefining Marine Illumination

Underwater lighting has become one of the most recognizable features on today’s recreational boats, yachts, waterfront properties and marinas. Once considered a luxury accessory, lighting now plays an important role in aesthetics, safety, entertainment and brand differentiation. Yet despite advances in LED technology, many underwater lighting systems continue to face two persistent challenges: marine growth that obscures light output and condensation that shortens fixture life.

Problems Worth Solving
The inspiration behind Metro Marine’s underwater lighting technology came from an ambitious waterfront lighting project in Long Island Sound requiring hundreds of underwater luminaires to illuminate a private island’s rocky shoreline.

Engineers recognized that traditional underwater lights would inevitably become covered with barnacles, algae and other marine growth, reducing effectiveness and requiring continual cleaning. The team began exploring whether underwater lights could keep themselves clean.

That effort led Metro Marine to experiment with ultraviolet C (UVC) LED technology, commonly used in water purification systems, to prevent biological growth from forming on fixture lenses. After months of field testing against conventional fixtures, Metro Marine’s prototype lenses remained clear while standard fixtures experienced reductions in light output as marine growth accumulated. The technology became the foundation for one of the company’s patented anti-biofouling systems.

Engineers also addressed condensation, another persistent underwater lighting reliability issue. Moisture trapped inside a sealed housing can lead to corrosion, reduced performance and premature fixture failure.

Metro Marine built a Class-1000 clean room to minimize contaminants during assembly and developed a patented process that replaces the air sealed inside each fixture with clean, dry nitrogen gas. The method is designed to virtually eliminate internal condensation while improving long-term durability.
Today, those patented anti-biofouling and anti-condensation technologies are incorporated throughout Metro Marine’s underwater lighting portfolio.

Engineering Light Quality, Not Just Brightness
While durability remains central to Metro Marine products, the company has also invested heavily in optical engineering. Rather than focusing solely on lumen output, Metro Marine concentrates on richer color, uniform illumination and greater control over beam patterns.

Its Dynamic Full Spectrum RGBW technology combines dedicated white LEDs with RGB emitters to create smoother color blending and more accurate white light than traditional RGB-plus-white systems. Precision optical lensing further directs light where needed while minimizing visible pixelation.

The Next Generation of Underwater Lighting
Metro Marine recently expanded those capabilities with its F-Series Full Spectrum underwater lighting family. Designed for yachts approximately 32 to 100 feet, the fixtures feature 72 high-output LEDs arranged in a proprietary optical configuration that allows adjacent fixtures to blend into a continuous field of light. Dedicated white LEDs produce more natural whites and richer full-spectrum colors, while multiple beam-angle options allow designers and installers to optimize illumination for different applications.

The company is also extending its technology with its new Full-Spectrum Thru Hull Light Fixture, an intelligent, flush-mounted luminaire for recreational and commercial vessels. Combining Metro Marine’s Full-Spectrum RGBW technology with more than 15,500 lumens of white light output and more than 54,000 total fixture lumens, the fixture delivers powerful illumination with close color mixing that minimizes visible color separation.

Built with an aluminum bronze housing for long-term submersion, the IP9K- and IP68-rated fixture incorporates intelligent thermal monitoring and integrates with Metro Marine’s Full Spectrum Hub and MM-CC-V1 Control Center. This unified power and data architecture enables refined color control and integration with Garmin OneHelm™ and NMEA 2000-certified onboard electronics.

Both the Thru Hull fixture and F-Series incorporate Metro Marine’s patented UVC anti-biofouling technology and anti-condensation assembly process, helping maintain consistent light output, reduce maintenance and extend fixture life.

Lighting as Part of an Intelligent Vessel
As vessels become increasingly connected, lighting is evolving beyond simple on/off functionality. Metro Marine’s MM-CC-V1 Control Center integrates lighting management into broader vessel electronics.

Designed for 12- and 24-volt DC systems, the controller can manage up to 256 individual full-spectrum fixtures while supporting programmable lighting scenes, automation and real-time system monitoring. It automatically discovers connected fixtures, verifies firmware and provides a visual interface for configuring the lighting network.

Integration with Garmin OneHelm™ and NMEA 2000 allows operators to control compatible lighting systems through onboard multifunction displays, while a companion mobile app provides access to color selection, scene programming, diagnostics and system notifications from an iPhone or iPad.

As boatbuilders incorporate increasingly sophisticated digital systems, expectations for underwater lighting continue to evolve. Owners want systems that produce striking visual effects while integrating seamlessly with onboard electronics, requiring minimal maintenance and delivering reliable performance season after season.
