From Eyeballing to Exact: How Spectrum Color Eye Reinvents Gelcoat Matching

Matching gelcoat color has always been one of the most frustrating—and visible—challenges in boat repair. When guesswork replaces precision, even small fixes can leave lasting marks on a vessel’s appearance and value. Spectrum Color Eye was created to change that equation by bringing clarity, confidence, and modern technology to a problem the marine industry has struggled with for decades. The Spectrum Color Eye scanner and app measure the gelcoat’s current spectral profile, accounting for fading, UV damage, and environmental wear. It matches not just the original factory color, but also the fade.

What problem is Spectrum Color Eye designed to solve?
The core problem is matching gelcoat color for yacht and boat repairs—especially on older vessels where the original gelcoat has faded due to sun, salt, and weather exposure. Even highly experienced technicians often rely on eyeballing the color and visual judgment, which is subjective and prone to error.
A poor color match—where a new patch fails to blend with the faded hull—can result in visible blemishes that degrade a vessel’s appearance and reduce its aesthetic and resale value.
Spectrum Color Eye is designed to eliminate this guesswork and subjectivity by replacing visual estimation with objective digital color measurement. It reduces trial-and-error mixing, shipping delays, and the need to cut into the boat to create additional repairs.

How has Spectrum Color Eye changed the boat maintenance process?
Spectrum Color Eye is a portable, non-invasive scanner paired with an app that delivers fast and accurate color matches. Instead of relying on a technician’s eye and repeated pigment mixing, repair yards can scan the existing hull surface and receive a precise digital color match—transforming what was once a gamble into a reproducible process.

With more reliable matches, repairs are completed faster, with less back-and-forth, reduced material waste, fewer visible mismatches, and shorter shipping timelines. The result is a more efficient, predictable, and higher-quality repair process that boosts professionalism in boatyards while minimizing aesthetic risk for owners.

What is the innovation behind Spectrum Color Eye?
Key aspects of the innovation include:
> Digital, objective color measurement: The scanner and app measure the gelcoat’s current spectral profile, accounting for fading, UV damage, and environmental wear—not just the original factory color.
> Decades of OEM data: Spectrum Color brings decades of OEM relationships, extensive color databases, and manufacturing records that underpin the accuracy of each match.
> Workflow integration: The process replaces “mix until it looks right” with a streamlined workflow: scan → receive match → mix and apply gelcoat → finish. This removes a major pain point, reduces reliance on subjective judgment, and eliminates unnecessary shipping delays and secondary repairs.

In effect, Spectrum Color Eye brings modern digital colorimetry to a field that has long relied on manual craftsmanship alone.

Who is the target market for Spectrum Color Eye?
The primary market includes professional boatyards and maintenance and repair services, particularly those working on older boats requiring gelcoat repair.

It also appeals to owners of older boats who want to preserve resale value and aesthetic integrity. By enabling near-perfect patch matches, Spectrum Color Eye helps owners avoid the “bad repair” look that can diminish a boat’s value.
In short, the target market includes both professional repair technicians and serious boat owners who care about finish quality.

Who is currently using Spectrum Color Eye, and what feedback have you received?
We currently have double-digit devices in the field, with strong feedback across a wide range of boat brands. Most vessels serviced using Spectrum Color Eye are more than four years old.

One customer reported drastically reducing repair turnaround time by transmitting digital scan data instead of mailing physical samples. This also shortened the time needed to receive the correct product and complete the repair.

Why hadn’t a product like Spectrum Color Eye been designed before?
Gelcoat color matching is inherently difficult due to fading, environmental degradation, and variability over time. Even mixing to original factory specifications often fails because years of sun and salt exposure shift color. Phenomena such as metamerism—where different spectral compositions appear similar to the human eye—make visual matching unreliable.

Several obstacles existed:
Technical limitations: Until recently, portable, affordable scanning hardware and software capable of capturing subtle spectral differences did not exist.
Data requirements: Accurate matching requires a massive reference database correlating spectral readings with gelcoat formulations. Spectrum Color’s 50 years of OEM relationships and pigment-compounding expertise made this possible.
Market inertia: For many years, visual matching was considered “good enough,” especially for small repairs, making investment in advanced scanning technology less compelling.

The breakthrough came from combining advanced scanning technology with a deep reference library and extensive feedback from technicians who consistently struggled with mismatches and rework. Spectrum Color Eye finally removes subjective guesswork from the process.

What impact could Spectrum Color Eye have on the boating industry?
Raising repair standards: As adoption increases, “invisible” repairs may become the expected standard rather than a bonus.
Preserving boat value: Higher-quality repairs help boats look newer for longer, supporting stronger resale values.
Streamlining workflows: Yards save time, reduce material waste, avoid rework, eliminate shipping delays, and increase throughput.
Driving digital adoption: Spectrum Color Eye sets a precedent for smart, data-driven tools in marine maintenance, modernizing a traditionally manual industry.

What direction is Spectrum Color heading?
At Spectrum Color, innovation in aftermarket gelcoat solutions is central to our mission, supported by decades of OEM collaboration and a global customer base.
We continue to refine Spectrum Color Eye and encourage broader adoption across boatyards, marinas, and owners. The product is now integrated into our Marine Detailing and Level I Gel Coat Training programs in St. Augustine, Florida, where we train several hundred students annually. We currently offer three classes: Marine Detailing/Gel Coat Correction, Level I, and Level II. More information is available at www.spectrumgelschool.com.

Since its original release, we have added new features, including a comparison module. Repair shops can now scan both a sample and a standard in the field, allowing technicians who tint on-site to adjust color precisely. There is no other product currently available that offers this level of gelcoat color-matching capability.
