Tori Murden McClureTori Murden McClure, best known as the first woman and first American to row solo across the Atlantic Ocean, set out on her first journey in a 23-foot plywood boat with no motor or sail in the fall of 1998. That year is on record as the worst hurricane season in the North Atlantic, and McClure’s attempt was thwarted by a series of violent storms that nearly killed her. A year later, after encouragement from boxing champion and humanitarian Muhammad Ali who told her she did not want to be known as the woman who “almost” rowed across the Atlantic, McClure made a second, successful attempt in 1999. In 2009, McClure published a non-fiction book on her journey, A Pearl in the Storm: How I Found My Heart in the Middle of the Ocean. A recipient of numerous international honors, Tori has been the subject of stories in more than 10 books and 30 major magazines. She has appeared on numerous national television shows. In addition, Tori recently was named the next President of Spalding University in Louisville, Kentucky and assumes office July 1, 2010. The working title of Ms. McClure’s speech is “Dare Mighty Things.”

SPECIAL SESSION:
Navigating the Global Marketplace

Professional BoatBuilder magazineWednesday, September 29th,, 6:15 p.m. to 7:45 p.m.

Today’s economy is international. It’s now common to source materials and labor from one country, assemble in another, and export to a third. There also are tremendous opportunities to provide professional services in other countries, but you need to know how to navigate the regulations in there as well as here in the U.S. If your business is entirely domestic, you may be missing out on opportunities to grow your company. For this open session our distinguished panelists are all veterans of offshore boatbuilding, from China to Poland to Dubai. They bring a wealth of experience, and expert advice to the table. Join us for a lively discussion on the pitfalls and potential rewards of looking beyond your own town, state, and country to save money and improve profits.

Speakers: Rob Kaidy (Ocean5 Naval Architects Inc.), Vic Duppenthaler (OneWorld Consulting); Additional Speakers to be Announced
